Proctor Baptist Church
You are important to God, so you are
important to us!

Note:
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its
flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown
out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city that
is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a
basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let
your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify
your Father in heaven."
(Matthew 5:13-16, NKJV)
In these verses, of course many
apply them to the individual Christian life and they do apply, but what about
the church as a whole? These verses
apply to the church as well. It seems
that if the individual, who also represents the church, would live their lives
according to these principles found here in these verses then it would have an effect
on all. Let us take a minute and explore
them together.
First we are compared to salt. Salt is used in different ways, to flavor or
to preserve. Then the question posed is
if the salt becomes useless what good is it?
The obvious answer is it is no good.
There is nothing you can do with useless salt. If you and I are the church and we become
useless is the Bible telling us that we are not good? When a church loses its effectiveness then it
becomes no good to God’s Kingdom. In
other words it has stopped doing what it was intended to do.
Secondly you are compared to
light. We take light for granted because
there are lights everywhere, but in other nations where there is no light or no
electricity you quickly realize how important light can be. Light illuminates things, helps us see better
in darkness. The example given is a city
on a hill cannot be hidden; its lights shine brightly for all to see for miles. So if light is to illuminate then you do not
want to hide the light but you want to place it as high as you can so everyone
can see. That is the message to the
church today, do not hide the light; the truth of God’s Word but lift it up so
all people will see it and it will help them to understand.
Thirdly we are told to let our light
shine. If you are a believer in Jesus
Christ do not be ashamed but boldly proclaim it. But notice how your light shines, when others
see your good works. That’s right not by
what you say but how you act. When the
redeemed church rises up and starts living as God intended then the world will
notice, not to praise you or the church, but to praise the Father in Heaven. Amen, that is our goal to bring glory and
honor to our Heavenly Father.
